Since I was up at 3 a.m. (which isn’t unusual for me), I went ahead and purchased “The Return of Rap” by Kane Mayfield. I’d been looking forward to its release, and it’s the best $10 I’ve spend in a long time.
There isn’t going to be a single released from the project — Kane explained during the listening party he held for media last weekend that because there are two “sides” to the project (so to speak), no one single can really reflect with any accuracy what the project really sounds and feels like (though I would beg to differ — I felt track nine, “Rap Music”, came as close as any of the 15 tracks could). One of the hashtags for ‘The Return of Rap’ is #pickaside (you have to purchase the project to really get what that means) — essentially Kane is asking the listener to really listen to both sides of the music he is presenting and make a decision about which they prefer. I’ve been trying to #pickaside all morning, and I must admit I am still struggling with it. One minute I’m sure which tracks I like, then I listen again and I like a whole different group of tracks. Its really daunting, but really great at the same time.
Not gonna leak anything here because I really want you to purchase this project. You can get it either on iTunes at https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-return-of-rap/id974206171 or on Google Play at https://play.google.com/store/music/album/Kane_Mayfield_The_Return_of_Rap?id=B6ag2qzvixoh4fzwdxs6oqvve2u&hl=en. But I will share some footage shot by The Breakdown Radio Show from the media listening party, where you can hear Kane talking about how he and “The Return of Rap” found each other. You can also check out what City Paper had to say about it here.
