Last night I got the chance to stop by The Windup Space to witness “Embody Lab_04: A Catalyst of the Vocal Arts”. Led by human beatboxer extraordinare Shodekeh, the night featured vocalist of every kind, using the instruments in their throats to convey every type of sound imaginable, all adding up to music. Participants sharing the stage included host/singer/songwriter Marc Evans, beatboxers Max Beats, Chuck The Mad Ox, spoken word poets Chris August, David Ross, Black Root and LOVE The Poet,  singers Alana Kold, Shanna L. Babbige, Allison M. Clendaniel, J Pope and Sahffi Lynne, and rapping vocalists B-fly and Jamma Wun. This type of highly experimental, somewhat orchestrated vocal free-for-all might be a major risk for some people to take, but Shodekeh is nothing if not brave in his artistic expression, and he tends to bring that out in others as well. The city’s arts scene is a better place thanks to him and venues like The Windup Space on North Avenue who curate this kind of beautiful anarchy.

As usual, many thanks to Thomas Kessler for his video — make sure you check out his coverage of performance arts in this area on his You Tube channel.
